A good mattress is one of the most important investments you will make for your health and comfort. A quality mattress can last between 8 and 10 years when properly cared for. Yet many people unknowingly void their warranty — and significantly shorten the life of their mattress — through simple, avoidable mistakes. Here is everything you need to know to protect your mattress and ensure your warranty remains valid.
Why Your Mattress Warranty Matters
Most mattress warranties cover manufacturing defects such as sagging beyond a certain depth, broken coil springs and faulty seams. However, warranties typically do not cover damage caused by improper use, stains, moisture or an unsuitable bed base. Understanding what your warranty covers — and what voids it — is the first step to protecting your investment.
Common reasons warranties are voided include:
- Stains or soiling from liquids, bodily fluids or cleaning products
- Physical damage such as burns, cuts or tears
- Using an unsupported or unsuitable bed base
- Removing the law tag or manufacturer label
- Improper handling during moving or storage
Use a Quality Mattress Protector — Always
This is the single most important step you can take. A mattress protector creates a barrier between your mattress and everything that could damage it: sweat, spills, dust mites, allergens and body oils. Many mattress manufacturers actually require proof of a protector being used as a condition of their warranty claim.
What to look for in a mattress protector:
- Waterproof layer — Protects against liquid damage, which is one of the most common causes of mattress deterioration and warranty voidance.
- Breathable fabric — A good protector should not make you feel hot. Look for cotton-top or bamboo-blend options that allow airflow.
- Fitted or fully encasing — A fitted protector covers the top and sides. A fully encasing protector covers all six sides and is ideal for allergy sufferers.
- Easy to wash — Your protector should be machine washable at 60°C to kill dust mites and bacteria effectively.
Support Your Mattress Correctly
An unsupported mattress sags prematurely and loses its structural integrity, which is almost always an exclusion in warranty claims.
- Check your bed base — Slatted bases should have slats no more than 6–8 cm apart to provide even support across the mattress surface. Wider gaps cause the mattress to dip between slats over time.
- Use the right base type — Some mattresses are designed for specific base types (solid divan, sprung divan or slatted frame). Check your mattress manufacturer's recommendation.
- Replace a worn base — If your existing bed base is old or sagging, replacing the mattress without replacing the base is a costly mistake — the old base will wear out your new mattress quickly.
Rotate Your Mattress Regularly
Rotating your mattress distributes wear evenly and prevents body impressions from forming in one area. Most manufacturers recommend rotating your mattress 180 degrees (head to foot) every 3 months for the first year and every 6 months thereafter.
Note: not all mattresses should be flipped. Memory foam and pillow-top mattresses are one-sided — rotating (not flipping) is all that is required. Check your mattress guide to be sure.
Keep Your Mattress Clean and Dry
- Vacuum regularly — Use the upholstery attachment of your vacuum cleaner on your mattress every few months to remove dust, dead skin cells and allergens.
- Spot clean spills immediately — Blot (do not rub) spills with a clean, dry cloth. Use a mild upholstery cleaner if necessary and allow the mattress to dry completely before replacing bedding. Never soak a mattress.
- Air it out — Strip your bedding and leave your mattress exposed for a few hours every few weeks to allow moisture to evaporate and fresh air to circulate.
- Avoid eating or drinking in bed — Crumbs attract insects and liquid spills cause permanent staining and mould growth inside the mattress.
Moving and Storing Your Mattress
If you are moving home or storing your mattress:
- Always store and transport a mattress flat or on its side in a mattress bag — never fold or bend it.
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated area. Damp storage leads to mould and mildew, which voids most warranties.
- Never place heavy objects on top of a stored mattress.
Additional Tips to Extend Mattress Life
- Keep pets off the bed where possible — pet hair, claws and accidents accelerate mattress wear.
- Do not allow children to jump on the bed — this damages the internal spring system and foam layers.
- Replace your mattress every 8–10 years, or sooner if you notice persistent sagging, lumps or disrupted sleep.
