Fresh white linen bedding neatly arranged on a bed

Quality linen is an investment worth protecting. Whether you have just purchased a new set of cotton sheets, a polycotton duvet cover or luxurious pillowcases, the way you care for them makes all the difference between bedding that lasts years and bedding that fades, pills or loses its shape after a few washes. With the right routine, your linen will stay soft, fresh and beautiful wash after wash.

Understanding Your Linen Fabric

Before washing any bedding, always check the care label. Different fabrics have different requirements:

  • 100% Cotton — Breathable, durable and easy to care for. Washes well at 40°C–60°C. May shrink slightly on the first wash, so allow for this when purchasing.
  • Polycotton — A blend of polyester and cotton. Wrinkle-resistant and quick-drying. Best washed at 30°C–40°C to preserve the polyester fibres.
  • Microfibre — Ultra-soft and lightweight. Wash at 30°C and avoid fabric softener, which can reduce its absorbency and softness over time.
  • Linen (flax) — Naturally cooling and highly durable. Wash at 40°C. Linen softens beautifully with every wash.

Washing Your Bedding the Right Way

Follow these best practices every time you wash your linen:

  • Separate colours — Always wash whites with whites and darks with darks, especially for the first few washes, to prevent colour transfer.
  • Use a gentle detergent — Harsh detergents strip natural fibres and cause premature wear. A mild, pH-neutral detergent is ideal for all bedding types.
  • Do not overload the machine — Bedding needs room to move freely in the drum for a thorough clean. Overloading causes uneven washing and excessive creasing.
  • Avoid hot water for coloured linen — High temperatures cause colours to fade and fabrics to shrink. Stick to 30°C–40°C for coloured sets.
  • Skip the fabric softener on cotton — While tempting, fabric softener builds up on cotton fibres over time, reducing breathability and softness.

Drying Your Linen

How you dry your bedding is just as important as how you wash it:

  • Air drying is always best — Hang your linen in a well-ventilated area or outside in the shade. Direct sunlight can cause whites to yellow and colours to fade.
  • Tumble dryer tips — If using a dryer, choose a low or medium heat setting. Remove bedding while it is still slightly damp and smooth it out to reduce wrinkles.
  • Never over-dry — Over-drying weakens fibres, causes excessive shrinkage and creates unnecessary static.

Ironing and Storing Linen

  • Iron while slightly damp — This makes the process easier and gives a crisper finish. Use a steam iron on a medium setting for cotton and a low setting for polycotton.
  • Store in a cool, dry place — Avoid storing bedding in plastic bags or airtight containers, as moisture can become trapped and cause mildew. A linen cupboard with good airflow is ideal.
  • Rotate your sets — If you have more than one set of bedding, rotate them regularly. This extends the life of each set and ensures even wear.

How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?

As a general guide:

  • Sheets and pillowcases — Every 1 to 2 weeks
  • Duvet covers — Every 2 to 4 weeks
  • Duvet inners and pillows — Every 3 to 6 months
  • Mattress protectors — Every 1 to 2 months

Quick Tips Summary

  • Always read the care label before washing
  • Wash at the recommended temperature
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach on coloured linen
  • Air dry where possible
  • Store in a breathable, dry environment
